Hello friends, this is an essay I wrote at school on freedom. I like to share it with you. Any suggestion or comments are welcomed.
Freedom is a paradox, a key to a handcuff and a handcuff itself. Freedom of thought and opinion is one of the most valuable elements in human affairs and existense which many have been deprived of and imprisoned for. No creature or living thing has ever been completely free, for all livings have needs. There is no absolute freedom except in the state of death where there is no need or want. To be free and not to be dead requires giving away the freedom which directly or indirectly harms the right of other members of society. There has to be an adjustment between an individual's freedom and society's power over the individual.
There are many instances when we have to give one of our freedoms to attain another. I have a friend named Shahram who sold his beatiful house and bought a condominum so he could work less and spend more time with his two little children whom he loved very much.
There are two types of freedom in general: freedom to act and freedom of thought. In freedom of thought, we should be free to question every thing and not allow anybody or any group to make decisions for us. He who lets the world or his own portion of it with which he comes in contact with, his party, his sect, his gang, his religion or his government, choose his plan of life for him maybe a good party member or a good religious person and yet not have much value as a human being. He/she is depriving his/her mind from growing and developing. We need individuality and diversity to grow. Men and women, in history, have been arrested, harassed, convicted and even killed by churches and governments, men like Socrates, Galileo, Newton and others. If it wasn't for the individuals who didn't think like everybody else, where would we be now? Those individual thinkers are, as John Stuart Mill said: "salt of the earth, without them, human life would become a stagnate pool. Not only is it they who introduced good things which did not before exist; it is they who keep the life in those which already exist." There is always need for persons who discover new truths and point out what were onse truths are no longer truths. One of the first civilizations in the world which was once the greatest empire on earth was called Persia (known as Iran today). Persia produced many great thinkers like Omar Kayyam (famous Persian mathematician, poet, astronomer and philosopher), Avi Sina (Persian philosopher and phisician. His work was translated into Latin and served as a foundation of medical learning in European universities for centuries) and was the place where lute (mother of today's western guitar), sport of polo, and many other things were invented. When newly arrived religion (Islam), by Arab invasion, gave people all the answers to questions of life and afterlife, the empire turned to a stagnate pool of minds. As years passed, individuality and originality faded from the culture. Beliefs and practices became merely traditional, and there would be no reason why civilizations should not die as the Persian empire did.
While it is essential for the individuals to practice their freedom in a healthy society, there needs to be a balance between limits of individual's freedom and society's power to control individuals. We have seen Hitler, Khomeini, and many other tyrants take away people's rights and even lives to gain more freedom to exercise their own power. I like to turn my stereo up loud anytime I listen to my favorite music, but if I do that at night time, I invade my neighbor's right to sleep. I respect their rights and do not turn my music up too high. We have to discard fragments of our freedom in order to be free and respected.
Any definition a person has for freedom is the collision of his/her needs with the world, and one of these needs is freedom of expressing his thought and opinion without fearing punishment either by society's laws or people's morals. If we don't feel free to question everything and experiment with new things, wouldn't we be doing the same things as hundreds of years ago? Nevertheless, the power of society should be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community to prevent harm to others. We all define freedom in our own unique ways. What we find today as freedom is our tomorrow's chain, as Khalil Gibran (prophet 1923) said: "in truth which we call freedom is the strongest of chains, though its links glitter in the sun and dazzel your eyes."
